Geri fait la une du,magazine UK, you magazine

It isn't difficult to understand why Geri Halliwell has chosen – in her latest departure from her career as a Spice Girl – to write a series of books aimed at five- to ten-year-olds.
Not because it has become de rigueur for a certain kind of celebrity (from the Duchess of York to Madonna) to turn their hand to children's fiction, but because Geri – at 35 – is so totally in touch with her inner child.
Enthusiastic, energetic, impulsive – and perhaps just a little ingenuous – she finds it easy to tap into the world of her eight-year-old fictional alter ego Ugenia Lavender, whose adventures she relates in six books that will be published, one a month, between May and October

You know what I like about children? And this is what I have tried to hold on to in myself – it is that they are so uncynical. Most adults want to believe in the bad, but I am the opposite. I am like a child because I want to believe in the good.
"I want to believe in optimism and joy and all those good things, and I do believe that people are fundamentally good – we are – and the great thing about children is that they remind us of who we are," she says, pausing in a moment of self-awareness
and adding: "Oh God, I know people cringe when I say things like that."
Thankfully, though, there is little to cringe about in Ugenia.

Indeed, despite any initial prejudices (Geri is well aware that people will approach the books with a degree of scepticism, thinking, "Oh no, not Geri Halliwell, the Spice Girl"), it's as difficult to dislike Ugenia as it is to dislike Geri.
She has created a heroine who is strong, sassy, believable and, occasionally, like most children, a little bit of a brat.
"One of the things I liked about writing the books was that it was almost like I got to exercise that brat-child that I am not allowed to be in real life.
"All the things I can't do in real life – like sulking or stamping my feet or being rude to someone – Ugenia can do in the book."
If there is a brat-child inside Geri, she is not visible today

From time to time I am sure she probably does stamp her feet, but on the day we meet, at the end of an exhaustive Spice Girls tour, she is, well, sugar and spice and all things nice.
Tiny, prettier and more delicate than photographs suggest, Geri has a life that is now – on a number of different levels – very much child-centred.
An adoring mother of 23-month-old Bluebell, who is having a play date with Cruz Beckham but will come to the studio later, she relishes the company of the "Spice Kids" who accompanied their mothers on their reunion tour.
"We had a crèche backstage and it was wonderful. They are all such great kids. I have huge admiration for Victoria; she had her boys with her the whole time and she's done such a great job with them – they are all so well-mannered and caring. Romeo is just so sweet with Bluebell

"And Melanie B's daughter Phoenix is a delight – she is amazing with the toddlers. I took her and Brooklyn shopping yesterday – they are all so lovely to be around," she says effusively.
Motherhood, Geri believes, has played a major role in bringing the Spice Girls (all but Melanie C are now mums) closer after a split of nearly ten years and will, she insists, keep them together whether or not there is another reunion (she laughs out loud at the idea of their taking Spice Teenagers on tour in ten or so years' time).
It irritates her that there were persistent press rumours of clashes among the five women, and that the curtailing of their tour was attributed to a fallout.
"The reunion was an amazing experience, everything I wanted it to be and more. It was challenging physically, and was exhausting, but it was also very healing just being with the girls.
"I love their company – they are all good women. Victoria and I were talking the other day about why the press always tries to make us out to be enemies. It couldn't be further from the truth. We are actually the biggest supporters of each other. We feel really proud of one another. Particularly when you add this other bond of motherhood."
Geri conceived Ugenia Lavender, she says with a big grin, at least a year before she conceived Bluebell.

Each of her stories (there are three per book) involves her heroine on a journey that will teach her – and the readers – a life lesson summed up at the end as an Ingenious Top Tip (these include "you don't know what you have got till it's gone" and "a real friend is there through the good times and the bad").
"I wrote these books before I had any inclination that the Spice Girls reunion would ever happen, and part of the motivation for creating this character was that I wanted to find a new medium for Girl Power. Ugenia is like all the Spice Girls rolled into one."
Back in the 90s – when the girls were a worldwide phenomenon selling over 55 million albums – Geri was known for being a passionate supporter of Girl Power (she once said that Margaret Thatcher was the "original Spice Girl").
In her iconic Union Jack dress (many of the original fans have been dressing up in similar outfits for the reunion tour) she was bold, mouthy and almost every man's favourite Spice (as George Clooney recently confirmed).
The youngest of three children (she has an older brother, Max, and a sister, Natalie), Geri grew up in Watford with her father Lawrence, who died when she was 21, and her Spanish mother Ana.
She retains a strong link to her roots and is accompanied to the studio by a friend she's know since childhood.

Before she joined the Spice Girls, her slightly doubtful career included stints as a nightclub dancer, a presenter on Turkish TV and even a nude model, and although at first she seemed to relish the success of the girl band, it was Geri who prompted their split by leaving the group in 1998, just before a North American tour (they went ahead without her and carried on till 2001).
Her first two solo albums, Schizophonic and Scream if You Wanna Go Faster, sold over two million copies (her third did less well), yet despite this she became better known for her friendship with George Michael, her yo-yo dieting and her penchant for miniature dogs than for any musical achievement.
But with Ugenia and her writing (she fully intends to go on and write an adult novel), she believes she has finally found her place.
"As a little girl I was always reading. It's something I got from my dad – he was into poetry, literature, black and white movies. I have always played with words in my lyrics, and writing is a natural progression from that. Words have always been my tool and my escape."
Many of the Ugenia stories are drawn from incidents inGeri's own childhood, but most of the characters are composites of people she has known rather than "real" people.
"Although the mean girl – Lara Slater – is predominantly based on someone at my school. She was the perfect girl, she got the best part in every play, she was very pretty and everyone seemed to love her.

I never felt pretty, and I always had to try too hard to be liked, so there was probably a bit of envy. Years later I was performing on a TV show and I saw her in the gallery – she was one of the engineers. She had done quite well, but some people peak at school, whereas I didn't find myself at school at all…" she says thoughtfully.
It is at this point that Bluebell arrives at the studio in a buggy pushed by Geri's mother, who is looking after her today.
The little girl, with her curls pulled into a bow on the top of her head, squeals with delight when she catches sight of her mother and is clearly distressed when, after a long cuddle, she is handed back to her grandmother so that Geri can finish our interview. "I love motherhood. It's such a gift.
"I think it's been revolutionary on my character. It's almost like opening the door to a whole world – you enter this secret club. I didn't know I was capable of such love. But then the downside is that you never stop worrying."
She will not talk (for legal reasons) about the criminal prosecution of a former nanny for the alleged ill-treatment of Bluebell.
Clearly, whatever the outcome of the court case, which we cannot report at this stage, the experience was traumatic and has made her understandably anxious about the wellbeing of her daughter.
"I think being overprotective is part of being a mother, and the only time I really relax when Bluebell isn't with me is when she is being looked after by my mother or my sister."
Ideally Geri would like to look after Bluebell all the time (when she was writing the books in the study of her North London home, she often wrote with the baby playing at her feet) and she was hugely grateful that her mother was able to accompany her on the Spice Girls tour.
"I just like being in Bluebell's company. I don't want to miss a moment of her. What's the point of being a mother if you are not with your child? She's so funny. She puts this tea towel over her head and then lifts it up and says, 'Hello!' and when I laugh she does it again.
"She recognises the power of laughter. But then, of course, like every mother, I think she is a genius."
There is, you sense, little space in Geri's life for anything apart from her daughter and her career.
She is, she insists, a "traditionalist" (although not a practising Christian, she had Bluebell christened because she believes Christianity is about "good values and putting an orderly direction into your life") who supports the ideal of a conventional nuclear family even if she is raising her daughter as a single mother.
"I do believe that as human beings we are designed to be together and love each other. Love is a wonderful, beautiful thing. I don't think you are ever too busy for love."
Geri hints that there is someone in her life, although she is not "going to marry tomorrow or anything".
She is, she says as she rushes off to be with Bluebell, very content with her lot in life. It would be good to find Mr Right, have more babies, regularly perform with the Spice Girls and write more books.
But what will be, will be.
"I am learning to roll with it and just see what life brings me. You know what? Whatever happens I feel blessed – I have so many beautiful things in my life above and beyond what I could have expected when I was a little girl," she says as she sweeps Bluebell up in a passionate embrace.
